Youth of Zion

On Saturday, January 27, 2018, the Ashdown Forest Young Women attended the annual Youth of Zion.  Youth of Zion is a regional event which occurs every January.  The event runs for nearly 2 hours and features amazing speakers who are both local and nearly local.

Hank Smith, a BYU professor of religion as has speaking engagements almost every weekend of the year. dazzled the youth with his unconventional method of sharing the gospel and his testimony.  He was FUNNY!  The premise for his talk was "Trial, Blessing, or both.  Smith referenced Alma 62:41
"... and many hearts were softened because of their afflictions..."  He also referred often to the story of Joseph of Egypt.  The point being "God can turn trials into blessings."  Most touching and inspiring was the story he shared of Elder Utchdorf and his family's laundry business.  It was the bike and that job that saved his life.  Sadness and disappointment are temporary.

The second speaker was Scott Esplin, also a BYU professor.  Esplin shared his family's recent experience in Jerusalem as he discussed the youth theme for the year, "Learn, Listen and Walk- How can I find peace in the world today? (Doctrine and Covenants 19:23)  Esplin referenced the story of Martin Harris and his "ins and outs" in church history and how like Martin we too can find peace after troubled water.    We must Learn, walk and Listen- all of these are action words- to come to know and trust our Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ, we must take actions.

The final speaker of the day was Shauna Watson,  Shauna shared her stories of triumph and tragedy as she came to know of her father in heaven's love for her after the passing of her father due to cancer when she was just 16.  Shauna's love of the gospel and for the youth permeated air.  She concluded her talk by singing a song with her mother and sisters, "The irresistibles"

This was a great event- put it on your calendar for January 2019!
